Garden Studio & Home Office

Shape Architecture was commissioned by our Client to explore the creation of a home office and studio space with a link back to the lower ground floor flat and re-working of the flat itself.
The project is very interesting, as it seeks to maximise the potential of an underused site, formed of a large courtyard garden and at a higher level a somewhat derelict garage giving onto the street. This is a project that is quite typical of the work we undertake and it is this experience that saw our practice selected. Our first thoughts were encompassed in a free-hand sketch which showed the potential for an interesting composition of building forms and materials, that sat well in a garden setting.

Garden Buildings
We explored two options, one being a single storey studio space that sat where the garage is located and another that incorporated the studio but also added another level below, given that the ground on which the garage was sat is likely to be easily excavated. This two storey option also provided an improved connection between studio and home office space and the courtyard garden.
Sedum Roof and Rooflights
Much effort has been put into the maximisation of daylight and views coupled with the composition of the proposal. A range of sedum roofs and rooflights help the building sit in its garden setting. The glazed link sits at the sunnier part of the garden and with its glazed façade and rooflights is a pleasant place to sit against the large existing retaining wall and look into the garden. All the glazed screens on this elevation will fold to one side to fully open the space.
Working from Home
Within the flat itself the internal planning has been improved to provide a better visual and physical connection with the garden and continue the theme of contemporary light filled spaces. As more and more people work from home and there is an increasing appreciation of garden spaces, this project illustrates the potential that can be unlocked.
