Community Architects
We are presently developing our Community Centre project in Colchester. Having obtained planning
permission last year for this prominent corner site, the project is now in its technical phase working
with the Client, a team of engineers and other consultants.
The project is complex as it involves extensive works to a large structure which has variously been
used as a Butchers and indoor market and then adds several ground floor and first floor extensions.
The design should unify the various components and provide versatile, private and public space for
the Charity that forms our client.
Community Projects
At the first floor we have added a linear extension finished with a Sedum roof. Set within the roof
are a variety of rooflights and also lightshafts. The lighshafts bring valuable daylight down into the
ground floor level accommodation. The prominent corner of the extension is distinguished by a
band of frameless glazing set within decorative brickwork. This contemporary language is then
repeated to another elevation to locate the entrance to the building’s gallery space.
The ground floor is largely given over to a Cafe and a Gallery. The first floor to Art rooms and all the
office and back of house spaces. The interior also incorporates a range of double and triple height
spaces to add a sense of light and space throughout.
