Working as architects in Fulham, Shape Architecture undertakes many extension and remodelling
projects for a variety of flats. This project concerns works to a lower ground floor flat and issues
around light and views are paramount. Our private residential work revolves around such issues and
it was this experience that led our client to appoint Shape Architecture.
Fulham Extension
The flat as presently configured has a quite small living dining space with kitchenette and then a
series of poorly lit rooms and finally little or no connection with the garden. The proposal totally
changes that. A rear and side extension which incorporates a courtyard, floods an open and
contemporary interior and links outside and inside spaces. A large kitchen and dining space benefits
from glazed doors onto the garden and a lower terrace, large format rooflights and at its rear wrap
around glazing onto a small courtyard. Bedrooms and bathrooms and associated storage is made
far more efficient and extensive.
Flood Risk Measures
Much effort has been made to address issues relating to potential flood risks and this formed a key
part of the planning permission. A green sedum roof over the extension serves to absorb a large
percentage of rainwater that falls upon it and forms a further area of greening to the garden. Gravel
and permeable paving are also integrated into the landscape design. As is a rainwater butt.
