Eastbourne Arts and Crafts Residential Extension and Refurbishment

Shape Architecture is working through a full house refurbishment project in Eastbourne, East Sussex The building sits in a circular Close, was built as an Arts and Crafts development in early 20th Century and replicates Tudor styling. The buildings all face onto the centre and thus each other. The Close’s unusual and interesting character with an increased frontage, has placed this property as a heritage asset, with an Article 4 certification. Planning approval for a scheme was granted previously and was successful in achieving a level of development to the property, but this was not in accordance with the client’s preference. The visual aesthetic and similarly in how the extra space was utilised did not appeal to the clients' needs. A new scheme sees the introduction of a rear extension which matches the roof form and mass of the existing building. A side extension forms an area to hold a kitchen space with the rear of the property now serving living and dining. The circulation of the free spaces works especially with the ground floor and has a good mix between open plan and ‘snug’ spaces. The proposal also sees the introduction of three-storey extension to the front entrance space and a new WC with storage in the main entrance hall. On the first floor the additional floor area is used as a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. on the second floor, a new shower room is introduced.
