Westminster Architects
Our practice undertakes projects of all sizes big or small across the Residential Sector. Each project is a response to the site, brief and budget and is underscored by our creative thinking and over 20 years of experience of designing sustainable buildings.
Our fees are a Fixed Lump Sum divided into each of the various RIBA work stages for further clarity.
Our Services
Shape Architecture is happy to tailor its services to suit our clients’ requirements. We also offer additional services such as interior, bespoke furniture and garden design. A full service would see us taking the brief and surveying the property through to completion on site and dealing with the final account.
Glass and Transparency
Common to all our projects is the use of glass to bring natural light into all parts of a project and to provide a better visual and physical connection between the Interior and exterior. At Grove Avenue in Ealing, we incorporate large, glazed screens and rooflights to flood several levels with light and provide excellent views out.
“Shape Architecture have successfully met the criteria laid down in a number of ways including the creation of an interior that works around the principles of transparency, openness and light. Their attention to detail was exemplary.”

Sustainable Architecture
Shape Architecture has over 25 years of experience in sustainable design through its Director, Jason Wren. We can offer proven and practical suggestions on improving the energy efficiency of a home and the use of technologies such as Heat Pumps and PV arrays. A feature of many of projects is the use of Green Sedum Roofs and these are easy additions to side or rear extensions.
Westminster Listed Buildings
Shape Architecture has obtained many and diverse Listed building approvals in Westminster. These range from the re-working of apartments such as at Grosvenor Square to the formation of Roof Terraces at Florin Court and much else besides. Our portfolio of listed buildings work ranges across London.
Case Study 01: Grosvenor Square, Westminster
In Grosvenor Square we re-worked a listed apartment to form a more contemporary interior more suited to modern living and our clients’ requirements. This includes the creation of new en-suites and a redesigned kitchen. We also designed a wide range of bespoke furniture for the Client. Planning permission was also gained for new windows with far improved thermal and acoustic performance.
Case Study 02: Eaton Place, Westminster
Our project in Eaton Place sees the addition of an extension to the Grade 2 listed property and the redesign of every floor level. As with many of these projects we are designing bathrooms and bespoke fixed furniture for our clients in addition to the architectural work. Technically it is a challenging structure given its size and the extent of re-work involved. We are also working with the Grosvenor Estate to satisfy their various conditions.
Our Client writes:
“It has been an absolute pleasure working with Shape Architecture on our projects. Robin especially has been patient and has contributed greatly to our design ideas which has been extremely helpful. The turnaround on updating drawings has also been fantastic as it has helped us keep our projects moving forward.
We will continue to use the team at Shape Architecture.”
Case Study 03: Florin Court, Westminster
At Florin Court we have added a large roof terrace over the full extent of this grade 2 listed art deco building. The project sees the provision of a variety of different spaces for the use of the residents ranging from yoga spaces to herb gardens and sitting areas. We were granted planning permission at our first attempt. This is the largest roof terrace we have undertaken in our extensive portfolio of roof terraces across London and it is very well received.
Our Client writes:
“Shape did a wonderful job designing the private roof garden of Florin Court in Charterhouse Square.
We now have an amenity which is much enjoyed by the residents of the 120 flats who can enjoy beautiful surroundings and sensational views across London.
Shape worked well within a tight budget and interacted effectively with both ourselves as the client as well as our surveyors.”
Case Study 04: Huntsworth Mews, Westminster
We transformed a Mews House in Huntsworth Mews by adding an additional storey and converting the garage into habitable accommodation alongside permission for a basement extension. The project is located in a Conservation Area, and this presented challenges to overcome at the planning stage. We are experienced at dealing with the constraints of Mews Houses and other projects such as at Adam and Eve Mews in Kensington which also adds a roof terrace show the possibilities.
Roof Terraces
Westminster Roof Terraces
Shape Architecture has been successful in obtaining planning permission for roof terraces throughout London. These vary from those to Listed Buildings to a variety of Mews houses and terraced properties. In Westminster we designed a large roof terrace to the Grade 2 listed Florin Court which incorporates a series of seating spaces, herb gardens and yoga area. With views out across London this is a valuable asset to the occupants of this apartment block.
Basements
Westminster Basements
Our basement projects form an important part of our portfolio of residential work. We have carried out over 30 basement projects throughout London. In Westminster for example this includes a basement extension to a Mews property in Huntsworth Mews.
A successful basement extension rests on the bringing in of natural light into the interior, which is key in creating a quality of space and this is where we have much experience. Added to this is the design of the stair which might be sat below a glazed section of roof. Thereafter the arrangement of rooms and their relationship with lightwells is important to consider.
Interior Design
Westminster Interior Design
Shape Architecture has extensive experience in Interior Design and bespoke furniture design which we bring to all our projects. We are experienced in interior lighting design and are happy to advise on all aspects of the use of colour. Some projects we undertake are small and largely focussed on interior design such as the re-modelling of bathrooms or design of bookcases and bespoke storage units.
Communication
Client Communication
Shape Architecture communicates clearly to our clients, and this is at the foundation for a successful project. All designs, no matter what size are developed in 3D alongside freehand drawing. A typical concept proposals brochure will have 5 different options described in 3D, 2D and freehand drawings and this will be the basis for discussion with the Client as we determine the preferred design. We are also able to provide animations of projects and model the movement of the sun through an interior.
