• Transformation of an apartment with mezzanine floor

Transformation of an apartment with mezzanine floor

This project in First Avenue, Hove presents an interesting challenge.  Our clients, having just moved down from London, bought a flat with a dramatic mezzanine level and much else to commend it.  Their feeling however was that the full potential of the flat had not been fully exploited and they asked Shape Architecture to help transform it.  As a practice we carry out a great deal of work in this area ranging from interior projects and extensions in the conservation areas to the re-working of listed buildings and have a group of trusted contractors who are efficiently realise this work.

Our approach saw us identify a series of interventions, consider the pattern of movement through the flat and identify those areas that would form the key features of the project.  Everything hangs together as an holistic approach.  Surprises arise as the building is walked through, but this is a calm approach not shouty but nonetheless creative and we hope realises the full potential of the apartment.

Many of our projects are interior design projects without any external work.

Our first suggestion was the way in which the mezzanine floor level was accessed and the identification of a use for it.  This also related to the re-design of the kitchen.  All created around ideas of colour, light and transparency.  Relocated in what was a very poor stair opened up and simplified the plan and added drama to the space.

How to use colour in my flat?

Choose a color scheme:  Start by choosing a color palette that reflects your personal style and the mood you want to create in each room. Consider neutral colors like white, gray, and beige as a base, and add pops of color with accent walls, furniture, or accessories.

Use the 60-30-10 rule:  This rule states that 60% of a room should be a dominant color, 30% a secondary color, and 10% an accent color. This helps create balance and visual interest in the space.

Consider the room’s natural light:  The amount of natural light a room receives can affect the way colors appear, so take this into consideration when selecting your color palette.

Use color to create moods:  Different colors can evoke different emotions, so consider the mood you want to create in each room and choose colors accordingly. For example, blue is calming and can create a relaxing atmosphere, while yellow is cheerful and can brighten up a room.

Mix and match: Don’t be afraid to mix and match different colors and patterns in your accessories and décor. This can add visual interest and make your space feel unique and personalized.

Test the colors: Before committing to a color, try painting a small swatch to see how it looks in the space and under different lighting conditions.

How to use lighting in my flat?

Lighting Design:  Use a combination of overhead lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting to create a well-lit and functional space. Overhead lighting provides general illumination, task lighting is used for specific tasks like reading or cooking, and accent lighting highlights specific areas or objects.

Consider the function of each room:  Each room in your flat will have different lighting needs, so consider the function of each room and choose lighting accordingly. For example, a bedroom will need soft, warm lighting for a relaxing atmosphere, while a kitchen will need brighter, clearer lighting for cooking and preparation.

Make use of natural light:  Natural light is a great way to brighten up a room and create a sense of spaciousness. Make sure your windows are uncluttered, and consider installing sheer or translucent window treatments to diffuse the light.

Invest in energy-efficient lighting:  Energy-efficient lighting like LED lights not only save you money on your electricity bill, but also provide brighter, clearer, and more durable lighting.

Add accent lighting:  Accent lighting is a great way to highlight specific areas or objects in your flat, like artwork, plants, or architectural features. Use accent lighting to draw the eye and create a sense of depth in your space.

How to use glass in my flat?

Use glass doors:  Glass doors let in natural light, making a room feel brighter and more spacious. Consider using frosted or stained glass for privacy while still allowing light to flow through.

Install glass partitions:  Glass partitions are a great way to create a sense of openness and flow between rooms while still maintaining privacy. They also allow natural light to travel deeper into the space.

Use mirrors:  Mirrors are a great way to reflect light and make a room feel larger. Hang mirrors on walls or use mirrored furniture to add visual interest and depth to your space.
