Basement Architects
Shape Architecture continues to work on a wide range of London basements. We are currently working on a particularly interesting basement extension in Barnes which is located entirely below the rear garden. Here, the challenge of how to introduce light into a basement extension differs from those basements built below an existing structure. The opportunities to bring light down through stair voids for example disappear and any rooflight or void is clearly visible from neighbouring properties.
Basements below Gardens
The sense of space below a garden is nonetheless very exciting and this is reflected in the design of the basement. Each space is lit by a series of structural glass panels and the movement between rooms is in large part defined by the series of natural light sources. As with most basement extensions a lightwell is incorporated into the design and provides a principle source of natural light and ventilation into the heart of the basement.
