Upgrade to Bungalow in Coastal Town
Shape Architecture have been working on an existing bungalow upgrade in Rustington, West Sussex alongside Bond & Hicks interior design.
The bungalow has the potential to experience sea views- as seen on a previous blog ‘Can I see the Sea?’; this proposal offers something special in opening up a first-floor living/work space with terrace providing seamless transition from internal to external enjoying views out across the sea.
A collaborative process, with involvement from all parties, client, interior designer and architect has led to a proposal that transforms a 1970’s coastal bungalow into a New England Stye beach house. The project now sees the creation of a dream home.
Using Adur & Worthing Council’s Pre-App service as a steppingstone, the project encompasses the enjoyable and diverse journey a project can take. The proposal now provides a tranquil and calming seaside dwelling that seeks to enhance the streetscape, whilst offering a unique design response.
Benefiting from a generous existing floor area, the main emphasis of the proposals centres on removing the existing concrete tile roof pitched roof and raising the eaves level. A new slate roof with flat sedum roof sections and rooflights allows an appropriate ridge height against neighbouring properties. This new main feature extends beyond over the introduction of a post which extends out as a hipped section. A gable introduced in the space gives a secluded terrace.
The design creates vaulted ceilings on the upper level. This geometric interest is only amplified with attractive use of large, glazed elements including a large sliding door assembly opening views across the water, as well as a glass box over a new staircase, creating a dramatic first entrance into the house.
The first-floor master bedroom, within its own gable offers an en-suite, walk in wardrobe and a beautiful free-standing bath in front of a large, glazed window. The vaulted ceiling with a gables gives architectural excitement to the design and a still a wonderfully cosy feel.
As well as a new pitched roof, the project looks to open areas of the ground floor, with a new kitchen on to a private enclosed garden, a new area of terracing, hot tub and revised landscaping that sit within the elegant New England aesthetic. The existing garage has been extended on the lower level and enjoys a new flat sedum roof with rooflights over. The overhang of the terrace above forms a secluded external dining area on ground floor level.
The project enjoys the replacement of windows to PPC Aluminium assemblies that follow a revised patterning and new ground floor patio doors. The whole building will undergo a refresh and redecoration. A new white shiplap cladding is introduced throughout to tie together new and existing. The result is a rejuvenated dwelling which we are look forward to submitting for planning.
