Introduction
At Shape Architecture we very much enjoyed working at Florin Court. The project concerned works to a large existing flat roof to create an environment that all the residents of this well-known Grade 2 Art Deco building could enjoy.
Grade 2 Planning Permission
The listed status and prominence of the building presented a challenge which Shape Architecture navigated without the assistance of a Planning Consultant nor Landscape Architects. The additional practical consideration is that that access to the roof is challenging and so the design approach should ideally focus on lighter easy to carry building components. Shape Architecture worked closely with the planning authority and produced a set of drawings that showed the design in its context. Listed building consent was granted straight away.
The Design
A series of garden spaces were suggested that included a herb garden, quiet space, yoga platform and social space. In this way a diverse and interesting roofscape could be created. Given the nature of the proposed spaces the sue of timber in a variety of ways presented a very buildable solutions. A number of different seating areas formed in timber were created that maximised the views over London enjoyed by this rooftop settings. The rooftop included a large number of services routes which were variously cladded in timber or galvanised planters to screen these elements. Timber cladding and planted walls also shrouded the roof motor room and access to the roof terrace.
A Successful Project
The project has proved a great success with the residents and will improve over time as the planting takes should.
Our Client writes:
Shape did a wonderful job designing the private roof garden of Florin Court in Charterhouse Square.
We now have an amenity which is much enjoyed by the residents of the 120 flats who can enjoy beautiful surroundings and sensational views across London.
Shape worked well within a tight budget and interacted effectively with both ourselves as the client as well as our surveyors.
