    Fulham Side Extension

Our Fulham side extension in Gastein Road in Fulham is now complete.  As a method by which a house can be transformed a side extension is straightforward, effective and popular.

Over our nineteen years of practice we have carried out very many side extensions, either as a project in its own right, or part of a larger whole house development or often linked to a rear extension to form a wraparound.  Shape Architecture was one of only thirty UK practices selected for the Royal Institute of British Architects book on ‘transforming a home’ and our featured project was a side extension.

At any one time in our office we will have a number of side extension projects at various stages ranging from planning, tender to being on site.

Infill Extension in Fulham: Planning and Design

This project in Gastein Road involved a full house refurbishment, including an infill extension and internal remodelling.

    Planning Considerations

The approach of the design was for the development to remain subordinate to the original house whilst allowing modern touches and an abundance of natural light. We worked closely with the client and the planning department to ensure the extension’s height and roof form was in-keeping and still provided an elegant and simple aesthetic.

    Layout & Space Optimisation

The new layout reconfigures the ground floor into well-defined yet interconnected zones:

    • A modern kitchen now occupies the former side garden and rear.
    • A central dining space/library links the old and new areas.
    • The original front reception remains a cosy family lounge.

By partially removing the rear wall, circulation was improved, allowing a seamless flow between the front and rear of the house. Retained structural walls were integrated into the design, serving as room dividers or built-in furniture spaces. Clever storage solutions, such as built-in cabinetry and a tucked-away utility area, maximise space efficiency.

    Enhancing Light & Connectivity

Victorian terraces often lack natural light, so the extension prioritised new openings. A large skylight above the infill floods the kitchen and dining area with daylight, even on cloudy days. Full-height sliding glass doors at the rear further brighten the space, making the once dim back-of-house feel open and airy.

Seamless indoor-outdoor living was a key goal. The wide sliding doors create a direct connection to the garden. A flush threshold ensures a smooth transition, and even in winter, the garden remains visually connected to the living space.

    Blending Old & New

The extension was designed to complement the Victorian architecture while introducing modern elements. Contemporary materials, such as the Crittall doors, add a modern touch without overpowering the traditional style.

Attention to detail helped integrate the extension seamlessly.

By carefully balancing traditional and contemporary design, this infill extension enhances both the functionality and aesthetic of the home, creating a bright, spacious, and well-connected living environment.
