Green Roofs Case Study 03
Our third green roof case study is to the recently completed community centre in Colchester. This project is for a local charity and brings together a number of their functions under one roof. The site is a prominent corner location and had previously been an indoor market and butchers. Several extensions were added and the entire interior re-worked to create a café, art gallery and a series of classrooms and staff rooms. A feature of the project is the two storey side extension and this is finished with a green sedum roof. Where once a series of disparate dilapidated structures existed now an elegant green roof punctuated with rooflight and light shafts sits. Once more all the advantages of a green roof serve to benefit the project ranging from the aesthetic appeal to the absorption of rainwater and the creation of a green space attractive to nature. Improved thermal and Acoustic insulation and the protection of the waterproof membrane are further advantages. In a built-up commercial area the roof provides welcome green space.
