Mews House Transformation
The transformation of a Mews house involves a number of key design issues.These primarily relate to the ways in which additional floor space can be added, the creation of new external space, the use of natural light and the design of well organised contemporary interiors.Our portfolio of Mews projects have addressed all these issues in a variety of ways, and it is this experience that contributes to the success of our Mews projects.Often the addition of a basement extension is a method by which additional floor space can be added. Other ways include the co-opting of a garage into habitable space. An additional floor is also a clear way to provide further floor space. Below we describe how this has been achieved via a variety of our projects. Many of these properties are also located in Conservation Areas.
Adam and Eve Mews, Kensington
At Adam and Eve Mews in Kensington we have undertaken the complete renovation and extension to a Mews House. The project added valuable additional space through the addition of a basement extension. External space was also added through the creation of a full roof terrace. The internal layout was completely reworked and is characterised by a feature stair running from the basement to the new roof terrace where it terminates in a glazed box with one half sliding over the other to provide access. The stair serves to flood the interior with daylight and ties the interior spaces together.Adam and Eve Mews is located in the Edwardes Square, Scarsdale and Abingdon Conservation Area.
Huntsworth Mews, Westminster
In Westminster we worked on the transformation of a Mews House in Huntsworth Mews which is located in the Dorset Square Conservation Area. We obtained planning permission for a basement extension, the addition of another floor and the change of use of the garage into habitable accommodation. Our clients did not build the basement extension but did construct everything else which has served to transform their home.
