The brief asked for the removal of a large iron staircase that currently allows access between the two levels of the courtyard, the basement level and the ground floor level, with access not required between the two in the future. In its place, Shape Architecture designed and displayed a great variety of options for an extension to the top level of the courtyard that would overhang the lower level like a balcony. We produced many examples of the design possibilities that the balcony offered, and after showing the architectural visualisations to the client, we are pressing ahead with a clean and contemporary design with the floor and balustrade realised in architectural glass.
The property’s kitchen overlooks the upper level, and there is currently a smaller iron staircase of three steps that stretch between the upper courtyard level and the French windows. Shape Architecture has designed a series of interventions to this window that will see it extended into the courtyard and finished with glass on all sides, creating an attractive window box into the kitchen that will flood the property with natural light. A large sliding door gives a sense of space and air.
To replace the iron staircase, Shape Architecture has designed a bespoke mini spiral staircase in concrete with a faceted glass balustrade that will provide the new access into the interior from the courtyard. Along with the window extension, the staircase was the end-product of a continuous evolution of design, with the desired end being a modern and contemporary courtyard.
Shape Architecture is currently working on the refurbishment and redevelopment of the split-level courtyard of a property on Montagu Square, Westminster. Like many of our contemporary architecture projects in London, we were the architects recommended by a client on the basis of the quality of our design work. The brief asked for the removal of a large iron staircase that currently allows access between the two levels of the courtyard, the basement level and the ground floor level, with access not required between the two in the future.
