Over the next few days we will provide a snapshot of our range of projects currently underway in London and Brighton. We hope this will provide a useful insight into the breadth and diversity of our work both in type and size. This diversity of projects has been at the heart of our work ever since we were established some 19 years ago and continues to characterise our approach to Architecture.
Our first review is the work underway in Brighton and Hove.
One of the projects we are most proud of is in Brighton at Rugby Road. A simple side extension but nonetheless a project featured by the Royal Institute of British Architects in their book on working with clients to transform homes. Thirty practices were selected to contribute and Shape Architecture was one. We chose to contribute this project at Rugby Road because it is not large but serves to transform the property. It is, like all our work, elegant, creative, contemporary and filled with light.
Norway St, Hove
We start with this project as it is small. Very small, being a rear extension to add a utility room to the property. Only several metres deep and similar width. But it adds value to the kitchen, is compact and efficiently designed. We obtained planning permission and worked up the technical design.
Wilbury Road, Hove
This project differs. It’s at a larger scale and more ambitious. A two storey rear extension with the emphasis on a glazed facade. Much time has been spent on designing the pattern of glazing with the generation of computer images illustrating day and night scenes. The project is about to be submitted for Pre-App with the planning authority to obtain valuable feedback prior to the full submission.
Erroll Road, Hove
A very interesting project located near to our office. The interest stems from the addition of a quite narrow rear extension that serves to totally change the circulation between the interior spaces and allows the kitchen to be relocated into a vaulted space. This project is soon to start on site.
Upper Market Street
This project combines works to a listed building to add roof terraces and work to the interior stairs . All areas of expertise within the practice. The project is at an early stage and will require detailed drawings and supporting Heritage Statement as we prepare listed building application.
Crown Gardens
This is a very interesting project. A small house located on Crown Gardens twitten. We were commissioned to re work the interior, add a porch, redesign the garden storage and add an air source heat pump. Again a small project but one that will much improve our clients home.
Ryde Road, Brighton
In contrast this is the largest project we are presently working on in Brighton. The site is a backland currently occupied by a series of dilapidated workshops. Our proposal is to create four new homes on the site. Each house is spacious and contemporary in its design and due to the elevation of the site all enjoy views towards the Downs. We have met with the planners on site as a part of a Pre-App process and the next step will be to submit a Full Planning application.
Ship Street, Brighton
This project will be very interesting. We have just undertaken the onsite survey of this fascinating house that includes a vaulted basement and look forward to drawing up the measured survey and creating a computer model as a starting point for the design process.
Egremont Place, Brighton
This project is for a roof terrace in Brighton. One of our areas of expertise is roof terraces both in Brighton and in London. It was our depth of experience that decided our clients to commission Shape Architecture to assist them. We have drawn up both survey and proposals to discuss with our clients.
New Steine, Brighton
This project concerns a flat in a Grade 2 listed property. Like many of our listed building projects in Brighton and in London we are looking to create a larger more open interior whilst recognising the original design that has over time been much changed.
